“I’m a guest here, remember?” I said, tossing and catching the keys back and forth.

Drake strode beside me toward the SUV—at least that’s where I was headed. Ol’ chestnut locks seemed to think I should go back inside.

But to my reasoning, it would soon be dawn.

Which meant light.

Which meant I was getting to this entrance to Underhill whether he wanted to take me or not.

“Rubezahl would want to accompany you,” Drake repeated.

“And I want a cherry and beetroot tickle,” I replied.

He cut off whatever he’d been about to say. “Huh?”

My face slackened. “We’re discussing wants, weren’t we? I’d also like a chai latte if we’re rolling with this. Full fat, none of that skim milk shit.”

Drake rolled his eyes, a corner of his mouth lifting in a half smile that . . . interested me. There was no denying Drake was easy on the eyes, and it looked like he might be in my life for a while. He hated Yarrow, which showed sound judgment.

Of course, this was the absolute worst time for me to be interested in anyone, so I shoved those thoughts aside as I opened the SUV door.

Drake planted his right hand on the cool metal, promptly shutting it. Sliding my gaze from his hand to his stubbled face, I cocked a brow. “Is this where you tell me I’m really a prisoner and the guest routine was a ruse?”

Something sparked in his eyes, and his lips twitched. “Not unless you want to play that game, Kallik.”

Well, he wasn’t short in the confidence department. “Get out of my way and stay here, or get out of my way and join me. It’s up to you,” I said.

I’d already wheedled the location of the entrance out of him last night with only a little bit of help.

Cinth may or may not have brought a couple of bottles of the ogre’s home brew with us, and I may or may not have spiked Drake’s drink.

I’d never tell, and Cinth was still sleeping off the amount she’d downed—and yes, I’d put a little bit of the ogre brew in her drink too to keep her sleeping while I investigated.

Drake groaned and took me up on my second offer. Brushing against me, he moved around the car to take the passenger seat.

“I’m glad we could work out an arrangement,” I said demurely as we both got inside.

He glared at me, but it quickly turned to a rueful laugh. “You’re going to get me in trouble, I can see it clear as day.”

Uh-huh. “And unless you want me to begin seriously contemplating that Rubezahl has set me up and you’re actually my prison guard, you better get explaining,” I said.

Reversing between two trees, I spun the wheel and headed back the way we’d come the night before, bouncing down the rough track. We were closer to the entrance now than yesterday, and I struggled to keep my fingers from drumming with anticipation. It wasn’t far at all. Which did somewhat muffle the cautionary whispers telling me I’d unintentionally drawn too close to the outcasts too quickly.
